The Lower Beach

Post by Demon on Sat Jan 05, 2013 7:21 am

Two miles long, and one mile wide. Here you can see only see 10 feet in front of you because the mist is so thick. This is where grizzly bears, black bears, and polar bears roam primarily. Also large aggressive seals like Elephant seas, and Sea Lions lay upon the misty beach. Also near the shore in the early spring sometimes, whale carcasses and a many scattered seal carcasses wash up on the beach. They are easy pickings for wolves.

Re: The Lower Beach

Post by Guest on Fri Jan 11, 2013 7:50 pm

Maddox blinked in attempt to see through the thick fog that covered the eerie beach. He could hear the pounding of waves against sand as the tide drew back, but couldn't see well enough to pinpoint the water's location. The intense smell of salt and damp seaweed masked any other animal's that could be lurking a mere twenty feet away. The thought of other predators kept his mussels tensed and his maw close to the ground.

After a short time of travel, his breath was cut short as his snout skimmed a pool of water. His head shot up as the water coated his nostrils, leaving a stinging affect. He coughed in attempt to expel the liquid when he heard a splash. Looking down at the shallow pool, he found the silhouette of a panicked fish as it hurried to the outer skirt of the puddle, as he had been startled by Maddox's abrupt noises.

Maddie trailed the rim of the puddle curiously. He had never been the best fisher, but his massive craving for food led him to try anyway. He approached the fish as he would any other small prey. His steps were light despite his size, and his neck was dipped low. Keeping his mussels bunched, he bounded into the elbow deep water, making quite the scene as he pranced after his future meal. The fish easily dodged his advances, dancing through his legs and toward the opposite side of the pool. Maddox gave a frustrated huff as he watched his snack vanish into the depths of the murky water.

The Raven black brute clumsily waded out of the water, cringing as the cold winter air bit into his wet torso. He shook his pelt out, attempting to free the water that clung to it, but that only helped to an extent. He was still drenched. He huffed as he looked up into the foggy sky. No sunlight prevailed in piercing the thickness of the fog above, so there was no way to bask in it's rays. With a huff of defeat, her slid onto his stomach, resting his head on his sandy paws.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Maddox lifted his head as a howl broke the violent pounding of the waves. He craned his neck toward the haunting sound before starting at a lope in it's general direction. He was unsure why he was so compelled to this wolf's call, but he was curious.

Raven stood still a hundred yards from the water. She stared at the black ocean while she waited for her pack to reach her. She hadn't realized she had gotten such a big start. They'd be here soon through, she'd take in the quiet view to the beach before it became chaotic by a pack of hunting wolves. She eyed the seals, laying around the beach. There were so many. Small fluffy baby seals hung close with their much larger mothers. She licked her lips hungrily, if they were fast enough they might be able to snatch a baby before the mothers noticed. The mothers were always alert though, so that we be unlikely and used as a final resort. She crept along the beach looking for her original target. Suddenly a large loud bellow rippled through the air. Raven flopped down and tried desperately to cover her ears. Then just as quickly as it started it stopped. She lifted her head and shook off the sand as she stood up. She raced down the beach after the bellow. She heard several more but they were not nearly as loud as the first. Then she found them. A large colony of elephant seals. In the middle battled two large bulls. One was significantly smaller than the other. The other was gigantic, almost eighteen feet in length and closing in on two tons. His flanks were riddled with scars and one of his eyes were missing. She hid in the bushes and watched him slip into the water. This was going to test the packs strength. They were going to take out the alpha bull.

Blade followed Raven's scent, through the trees as they slowly faded towards the plains and grassy rocks. His nose twitched as the smell of salt stung his nose, growing more profound. The stripes on his grey pelt mixed with the grasses and fog of the area as he silently crouched next to Raven. His ears flicked to listen to the fight. His gaze shifted to hers as she watched the larger bull, quickly understanding what she was thinking. "That one?" he whispered, just to be sure.

Silk arrived not long after the male, skimming her underbelly against the ground as she crept through the grass to keep her all-to-noticeable white pelt from any suspected prey's view. She reached the bushes, sliding in beside Raven before inclining her head ever so slightly to follow the alpha's gaze. When she laid eyes on the massive animal, she pinned her ears and lowered her head back behind the cover of the grass, whispering quietly. "Can we even pierce through to it's vitals?"

Raven watched the rest of her pack arrive. Blade crouched on her right with Silk on her left. She answered Blades question with a silent nod before turning to answer Silk. "No we can't," she said quiet enough so only Silk and Blade could hear. "Not initially, not the innards. There's too much blubber to reach the insides themselves. Even if there were more of us. No, we have to go for the face. It's the only vulnerable place. But we have to be careful. The teeth are very big and very sharp. One bite could be lethal to us. The sensitive trunk is an option though. No external ears. Though our best bet would have to be the eyes and use those to reach the brain." She watched the male. He favored his left side. He was blind on that side. They could use that to their advantage. "They can run too and crush us that way. A swipe with their tail might kill us as well. They aren't awake at night so we strike then. They may have sentinels posted so we have to be quiet." She looked at both wolves at her sides. "This is a dangerous mission and there is a chance of death. If either of you don't want to come, you may return to the den and no one will blame you."

Blade shook his head and gave the alpha female a cocky grin. "Danger? Psh, I laugh in the face of danger!" he whispered, then droppd his head a little to look down and chuckle. When he looked back, the light in his eyes still shone. "Nah. I wouldn't miss this for anything. We live or we die. As a pack." He leaned over a little to look for Silk's response, not with pressuring eyes but just curiosity.

Raven smirked at him. "Alright Blade," she said quietly. She watched the seal for a few more minutes before turning to Silk.

Silk flicked her ears in Raven's direction as she spoke, giving a slight shake of her head sh the alpha described how they were going to take the animal down. It sounded painful and cruel- far from the quick, precise kill she would have preferred. But that was nature, she supposed. It was either the seal or the pack, and it's death would provide them life for a long, long time, opposed to taking the lives of even more creatures to fill their empty stomachs. Silk glanced over at Blade, watching the spark that lit in his eyes at the prospect of a thrill, and then to Raven as she acknowledged him, waiting until both sets of eyes were on her. "I'm in," she said, giving them a curt nod. "You two will need all the help you can get."

Raven smiled. She could always count on these two. "Alright," she said. "I suggest you both get your rest and conserve your strength. We will attack tonight, before the moon comes up and their vision is low."

Raven sits up. They're been waiting for the sunset for a long time. Careful to avoid alarming Silk and Blade she creeps out from under the bush. She eyes the seals warily and sniffs the air. A stranger is near, she thinks. She pads towards the scent.

Blade watched Raven curiously, his ears flicking back uncertainly. "What is it?" he whispered, not sure until he took a deep breath and caught the trace of a scent from the direction his Alpha was heading. His tail rose slightly. He glanced over at Silk, nodding in Raven's direction that they should probably follow her.

Raven stopped and listened to the quiet footsteps behind her. Blade soon appeared at her side. He smelled the strange scent too. "There's a stranger close by," I said quietly. The stranger, however, did not smell like a timber wolf or a dire. Exotic. My ears perked with interest and I approached the stranger, wary of not alerting the nearby seals.

Key:
"Sorry, I'm late." Key said softly. She stopped as soon as she noticed the strange scent. "Pray?" she asked herself. "No, not pray, a wolf. But what kind of wolf?" Key thought. She had never smelled a scent like this one before.

Raven glanced at Key as she approached silently behind her. She said a quiet apology to her and Raven nodded. She slipped silently next to the smaller wolf and continued creeping forward toward the scent. "I don't know what kind of wolf she is," she whispered back. "But we will find out soon enough."

Key sniffed the air. She wandered where the wolf was hiding. She got ready to fight, just in case. "Hopefully it's not an Axis Pack attack." She thought.
